Oriel’s qualifiers for the National Ladies Singles took place on Tuesday the 5th of November in Crossmaglen with some great bowls throughout.
Section A
In the preliminary round Rosie Colgan was able to come out on top against Ruby Cummiskey in a battle of the juniors, while Bernie Cunningham won with an end to spare against Anne Murphy.
In the first round proper, Bernie Cunningham had a 10-5 win against Rosie Colgan. Philomena Reel beat Claire Corrigan with an end to spare, as did Gill Roullier against Fiona Corrigan. The tightest game was between Rachel Brennan and Monina Birch, with Monina getting the victory after a tie-breaker end.
In the final round of the night Philomena Reel got the win against Bernie Cunningham, while there was a tight match between Monina Birch and Gill Roullier. Monina went into the last end 9-8 up and was able to hold on for the win. This leaves Philomena Reel to battle it out with Monina Birch in January for a spot at the National Finals tournament in Belfast
Section B
In the first round of section B Emma Colgan came through her match with Margaret O’Hare. Christina Holmes beat Geraldine Boyle with an end to spare. Imelda Hanratty and Maureen Nugent had a great tussle, with Maureen 2 up in the last end. However Imelda was able to come out with a good win. Mary Carthy had a good game too with Lily Commisky. With the score 9-9 in the last end Mary got the victory.
In the last round of the night Imelda Hanratty beat Mary Carthy comfortably to go through. Emma Colgan and Christina Holmes had a tight contest. Emma was 2 up going into the last end, however Christina was holding 2 with Emma’s last bowl to play. Emma was able to fire and knock Christina’s bowls out to hold on for the win. Emma Colgan and Imelda Hanratty will face off at the Oriel National finals night in January to qualify for Belfast.
